Clinical Psychology – Careers in Psychology

What is Clinical Psychology?

Clinical Psychology is a branch of psychology in which individuals specialise in diagnosis and treatment of various psychological, emotional and behavioural disorders. If you are interested in helping individuals cope with mental illness, abnormal behaviours and/or psychiatric problems, this might be the field for you. They are also equipped to help with less severe issues like relationship conflict, career guidance, adjustment issues and so forth.

Clinical Psychologists & psychiatrists are not the same. Psychiatrists have a medical degree, whereas, clinical psychologists do not, hence, psychiatrists are legally allowed to prescribe medication, while clinical psychologists are not. Moreover, clinical psychologists have more training and expertise in assessments and therapy, unlike psychiatrists. Usually, both parties work in conjunction to provide the best possible treatment for the client.

Clinical Psychology is categorised under the Division 12 of American Psychological Association (APA) and individuals need a license to practice in most countries. In India, the license is provided by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI).  The diagnosis & assessments of licensed clinical psychologists can be also be used for legal purposes, if necessary.
